The Frosterley and Stanhope Railway Company was the smallest railway company (2¼ miles in length) and was incorporated under act of 28th June 1861 (23 & 24 Vic, cap.72).

The company was projected under auspices of Stockton and Darlington Railway Company, with which it was amalgamated under act of 30th June 1862.
