The Forest of Dean Central Railway Company was incorporated under their act of 11th July 1856 and worked by Great Western Railway Company, first, under an agreement dated 29th April 1865 and later, after 1890, under a lease from Crown.

As from 1st January 1923, company was absorbed into Great Western Railway Company under Great Western Railway (Forest of Dean Central Railway) Absorption Scheme dated 3rd August 1923.
