The Exeter Railway Company was incorporated as Exeter Teign Valley and Chagford Railway Company under their act of 20th August 1883.

The powers of this Act were revived and name changed to Exeter Railway Company by virtue of act of 12th August 1898.

The company was absorbed into Great Western Railway Company as from 1st July 1923 by Great Western Railway (Exeter Railway) Absorption Scheme 3rd August 1923.
