The Manchester Bury and Rossendale Railway Company was incorporated under Manchester Bury & Rossendale Railway Act, 4th July 1844. Blackburn, Burnley, Accrington & Colne Extension Railway Company was incorporated under East Lancashire Railway Act of 30th June 1845, with provision, in section 39, for Manchester Bury & Rossendale Railway Company to purchase undertaking. Section 40 provided that upon uniting of these two companies, company name was to be East Lancashire Railway Company. The East Lancashire Deviation and Branch Railways Act, 27th July 1846, recites in its preamble that above mentioned union and consolidation had taken place.
Under Lancashire & Yorkshire and East Lancashire Railways Amalgamation Act, 13th August 1859, East Lancashire Railway Company was dissolved and vested in Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company.
