The Durham and Sunderland Railway Company was incorporated under an act of 13th August 1834 (4 & 5 Wm 4, cap.96).
Under an act of 1846 (9 & 10 Vic, cap.235) Durham and Sunderland Railway Company was purchased by Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway Company.
