The Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) was established through the Sports Grounds Safety Authority Act 2011, which transformed the Football Licensing Authority into the SGSA and received Royal Assent on 12 July 2011. The SGSA commenced on 1 November 2011 and in its new role will continue to carry out its statutory functions under the Football Spectators Act 1989 in England and Wales, and to expand its advisory functions in relation to other sports and internationally.
