The Devon and Cornwall Railway Company was incorporated as Okehampton Railway Company under Okehampton Railway Act 17th July 1862 (25 & 26 Vic, cap.165). Its name was changed to Devon & Cornwall Railway under the act of 29th June 1865 (28 & 29 Vic, cap.149).
Provisions were made in the London & South Western Railway (Additional Powers) Act 16th July 1866 for lease or transfer of the Devon & Cornwall Railway Company to the London & South Western Railway Company when certain conditions were fulfilled.
The Holsworthy Branch was transferred in 1880 under powers conferred by the London & South Western (Various Powers) Act 1876, and the final transfer apparently took place about 1889.
