The Cowes and Newport Railway was incorporated under an act of 8th August 1859. Under an agreement dated 4th December 1872 this company and the Ryde and Newport Railway Company were administered as a joint concern.
Under the Isle of Wight Central Railway Act of 1887, Cowes and Newport, Ryde and Newport, and Isle of Wight (Newport Junction) railway companies were amalgamated from 1st July 1887 to form Isle of Wight Central Railway Company.
