Prisoner name: John Peck.
Prisoner occupation: Draper.
Court and date of trial: Cornwall Quarter Sessions, Penzance, 24 October 1831.
Crime: Stealing lime, the property of Alexander Berryman the Younger, mason from Chapel Street, Penzance, Cornwall on 8 September 1831.
Initial sentence: Three months imprisonment, 'stated to have been mitigated by the Court to one month'.
Petitioner(s): John Peck, the convict, undersigned by 26 inhabitants of Penzance.
Grounds for clemency: In view of the small amount of lime proved to have been taken by the convict, the court's intention was for the sentence to be reduced to one month's imprisonment, which he has served. Previous good character, although stated to be eccentric.
Other papers: Magistrate's report on the case by the Mayor of Penzance. Copy indictment. Copy of judge's notes. Letter from Edward Pendarves transmitting the petition to the Home Department.
Additional Information: Held in Penzance prison. The amount of lime proved to have been taken by the convict was one trowel full. Two brothers named Thomas were subsequently indicted for felony [for the theft of the remaining lime].
