Incorporated under an act of 1828 (9 Geo 4, cap.61) and leased to Stockton & Hartlepool Railway Company for 21 years from 1st September 1844 under an act of 1843 (7 Vic, cap.46). This lease was altered to one in perpetuity to that Company as from 1st January 1851 under powers conferred by an act of 1843.
Under an act of 30th June 1852 (16 Vic, cap.142), Stockton & Hartlepool Railway Company and Hartlepool West Harbour & Dock Company amalgamated to form West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway Company. The new company purchased Clarence Railway Company which became vested in West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway Company, the three companies not being actually merged into one until 17th May 1853.
West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway Company amalgamated with North Eastern Railway Company as from 30th June 1865 under an act of 1865 (28 & 29 Vic, cap.368).
North Eastern Railway Company, with Hull & Barnsley Railway Company, and Hull Joint Dock Committee, was dissolved and united into one company named North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st April 1922. This North Eastern Railway Company became part of London & North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
