The Cawood, Wistow and Selby Light Railway Company was incorporated under an act of 2nd July 1896 (59 and 60 Vic, cap.46).

The line was transferred to the North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st July 1900 after the agreement for the sale was scheduled to and confirmed by the North Eastern Railway Company's Act of 1900.
