The Cambrian Railways Company was incorporated by the Cambrian Railways Act of 25th July 1864 which dissolved (1) Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch Railway, (2) Oswestry and Newtown Railway, (3) Llanidloes and Newtown Railway, and (4) Newtown and Machynlleth Railway.

By virtue of Cambrian and Coast Railways (Amalgamation) Act 5th July 1865, Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast Railway was amalgamated with Cambrian Railways as from 5th August 1865.

Under Cambrian Railways (Steamboats) Act, 9th July 1889 they were authorised to provide and work steam vessels between certain points and, by agreement dated 29th February 1888, worked Mid Wales Railway as from 1st January 1888. The latter company amalgamated with Cambrian Railways as from 1st July 1904 under Cambrian Railways (Mid Wales Railway Amalgamation etc) Act 24th June 1904.

The company was amalgamated with Great Western Railway as from 1st January 1923 by virtue of Railways Act 19th August 1921 and was the largest of the Welsh independent companies amalgamated into the GWR at this time.
