The Bury and Tottington District Railway Company was incorporated under an act of 2nd August 1877.

Under the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Act 24th July 1888 Section 34, the company was transferred to and vested in Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company as from 1st March 1889, and, under the terms of Section 47, was to be dissolved.
