The Financial Institutions Division was created in 1981 under the Home Finance Group and thereunder the Domestic Economy Sector of HM Treasury. A Banking and Building Societies team existed which was responsible for the development of policies concerning Banking, The Banking Act, The Registry of Friendly Societies and the Bank of England. The team was disbanded in 1982 and its functions were transferred to HM Treasury, Public Finance Sector, Home Finance Group, Financial Institutions Division, Banking and Consumer Credit team / branch that continued beyond 1981.
The Home Finance Group comprised three other administrative divisions: Public Loans Division, the Monetary Policy Division and the Accounts Division (consolidated funds).
