The Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil Junction Railway Company was incorporated under the Brecon & Merthyr Junction Railway Act of 1st August 1859. In July 1922, the company was absorbed into Great Western Railway Company under the Great Western Railway (Western Group) Preliminary Absorption Scheme (No.2) of 24th July 1922.
