Administrative / biographical background

The Blackburn Railway Company was established in 1851, under the special provisions of the Blackburn Railway Act of 24th July 1851.

Its predecessor companies were the Blackburn, Darwen & Bolton Railway Company (incorporated under the Blackburn, Darwen & Bolton Railway Act of 30th June 1845), and the Blackburn, Clitheroe & North Western Junction Railway Company.

These two companies amalgamated in 1847 to form the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe & West Yorkshire Railway Company. As from 24th July 1851, by the special provisions of Blackburn Railway Act, the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe & West Yorkshire Railway Company was to be styled and described as The Blackburn Railway Company.

In 1858, the Blackburn Railway Company was vested in the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company under the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Act of 12th July 1858.
