The Bishop's Stortford, Dunmow and Braintree Railway Company was incorporated under the Bishop's Stortford, Dunmow and Braintree Railway Company Act of 22nd July 1861.

In 1865, under an act of 29th June, the railway company and the line was vested in the Great Eastern Railway Company.
