The Bishop Auckland and Weardale Railway Company was incorporated under the Bishop Auckland and Weardale Railway Company Act of 15th July 1837.
By an act of 1847, the Bishop Auckland and Weardale Railway Company, together with the Wear and Derwent Railway Company, the Weardale Extension Railway Company and the Shildon Tunnel Company, amalgamated with the Wear Valley Railway Company.
