The Barnsley Coal Railway Company was established in 1861 by the Barnsley Coal Railway Company Act of 16th January 1861. From 30th April 1863, the company had working arrangements with Midland Railway, with the South Yorkshire Railway & River Dun Company, and with the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company.

In 1863, the Barnsley Coal Railway Company was purchased by the South Yorkshire Railway & River Dun Company by the Act of 13th July.
