This series contains annual reports of the Public Works Loan Board and National Investment and Loans Office.

Under the terms of the Public Works Loans Act, 1875 the Public Works Loan Commissioners had to make a report every financial year. The contents and format of these reports have been modified slightly from time to time; much of the information appears in tabular form. From 1876 to 1966 the reports are in bound volumes, but from 1966 they are unbound, and each Report forms a separate piece.

The information contained in the reports consists principally of details of advances made under their several classifications and the increase or decrease in amounts compared with the preceding year; a statement of the bodies to whom loans have been made; rates of interest charged; terms of years over which the loan has been granted; the mode of repayment; an account; advances still outstanding; arrears; amounts repaid; amounts irrecoverable; amounts issued from the Exchequer for advances, with the amounts actually advances and received in repayment; fees received from borrowers; the expenses of the department; the account of the commissioners; a summary of operations and comparison with earlier years; and details of applications for loans refused. In some instances total figures are given from the inception of the commission (1817) for comparison with the particular year.
