Description

Court copies of wills proved by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) and Court for Probate of Wills and Granting Administrations before 1660 and by lesser jurisdictions after 1660, but only in cases where the Prerogative Court of Canterbury cancelled the original certificates of probates or administration with the will annexed.

The records are for the most part court copies of wills with the certificate of probate attached. In some cases only the certificate survives.

Most of thedocuments are wills or relate to wills originally proved in inferior jurisdictions to the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Some of them bear endorsements stating that the estates to which they relate fell within the jurisdiction of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, and that for that reason they were surrendered to the Court.

Administrative / biographical background

When a will was proved before a court with probate jurisdiction the executor received a copy of the will. A certificate stating that probate had been granted to the executor and setting out the terms of the grant was attached to the copy of the will by a strip of parchment bearing the seal of the court.
