Section 4(1) of the Public Records Act 1958 empowers the Lord Chancellor to appoint places outside the Public Record Office as places of deposit for public records.
To enable exercise of these powers, details of places known to contain, or applying to receive, public records were assembled by the Public Record Office, from questionnaires completed by the applicants and, later, from visits to assess the suitability of facilities available for the safekeeping, preservation and inspection of the records. These details formed the basis of draft schedules of places to be appointed between 1960 and 1973.
