Dr. Hubert Hall was born in Yorkshire in 1857, joining the Public Record Office in 1879 where he became an assistant keeper in 1912. From 1910 to 1918 he served as Secretary to the Royal Commission on Public Records, and retired from the Public Record Office in 1921.
In addition to these duties he delivered lectures on handwriting at Kings College, and was literary director of the Royal Historical Society. He continued his wide academic interests until his death in 1944.
