Administrative / biographical background

The Advisory Council on Public Records was first appointed by the Lord Chancellor on 22nd January 1959 pursuant to the Public Records Act, 1958 (6 and 7 Eliz 2 Ch 51), s 1(2). Under the chairmanship of the Master of the Rolls its responsibility was to advise the Lord Chancellor on matters concerning public records in general and in particular, on those aspects of the work of the Public Record Office which affect members of the public who make use of the facilities provided by the Public Record Office. The council was a Public Record Office responsibility until 1 April 1992 when the Public Record Office became an executive agency. The post was thereafter filled by the Lord Chancellor's Department.
