Description

The Public Record Office indexes to general correpsondence are of two kinds:

  • (i) chronological indexes, 1838 to 1938, which were compiled before the correspondence to which they relate was bound for permanent preservation. They contain some references to letters which have been destroyed and take the form of chronological entries under a number of general subject heads.
  • (ii) alphabetical indexes, 1903 to 1938, which were compiled from the correspondence selected for permanent preservation. They are comprehensive subject indexes and will normally be found more useful than the chronological indexes.
