These are transcripts of papers in the Carte MSS at the Bodleian Library. That collection was formed by the Rev Thomas Carte as material for his biography of James, Duke of Ormonde, and as a result of a long series of literary and historical undertakings both before and after the completion of the biography.
The collection comprises original manuscripts and transcripts, relating principally to the affairs of Ireland between 1640 and 1685.

In 1863, in order to facilitate the study of Irish history, the Treasury commissioned T D Hardy, the deputy keeper of the public records, and Professor John Sherren Brewer of King's College, London, to report, among other things, upon papers in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, of Thomas Carte, the historian and author of a life of James, Duke of Ormonde
In 1865, following the printing and publication by HM Stationery Office of Hardy's and Brewer's report in the previous year, the Treasury decided to have transcripts made of documents in the Carte collection which were of an official character, the selection being undertaken jointly by the Roman Catholic, Dr Charles William Russell of Maynooth College, and an Irish Protestant scholar, John Patrick Prendergast

- The orginal papers were used by the Reverend Thomas Carte for his Life of James, Duke of Ormonde, London 1735-1736. For the final report on the transcription of the Carte Papers see the Thirty Second Annual Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records, London 1871, Appendix I pp. 1-236. See also deputy keeper's reports numbers 29-31 for information concerning the progress of the work.
