1905-1981
Papers of Robert Fordyce Aickman, 1945 to 1981, arising mainly from his work as founder and vice-president of the Inland Waterways Association, and similar material of the general secretary of the association, 1950 to 1956, and of its Fenland Branch, 1948 to 1956.
There are minutes of meetings and papers of the association, 1950 to 1967, and of certain of its Branches, 1951 to 1969.
The series also includes minutes and papers of other organisations connected with rivers, canals, and inland transport, 1951 to 1981, together with a collection of waterways publications and assorted miscellanea, 1905 to 1978.
Further boxes of correspondence of Robert Aickman and the general secretary were received after Robert Aickman's death and have been integrated with the original deposit.
The whole collection was received in a largely unsorted state, with pages of the same letter in different boxes and enclosures separated from their covering letters. Every effort was made to arrange the papers in chronological order and to re-unite letters and enclosures but this was not always possible.
PRO 30/82/422-425 contain a number of such loose papers.
