Created in March 1965 by the Prime Minister, this was a short-lived and very small department of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) which was responsible for implementing government policy on immigration. Its proposal regarding the setting up of a National Committee for Commonwealth Immigrants (NCCI) which was published in August 1965 in the White Paper Immigration from the Commonwealth (Cmnd 2739), was implemented in September.
Its responsibilites were taken over by the Home Office department of Immigration and Nationality in December 1965.
