The A J Balfour papers were part of the Balfour Papers deposited by Lord Balfour in 1947 with the British Museum. On examination it was felt that those relating to the Irish Secretaryship would be more properly associated with the G W Balfour papers, and they were accordingly transferred to the Public Record Office in 1963. The papers of G W Balfour, who became the 2nd Earl Balfour, had meanwhile been presented to the Public Record Office in accordance with his own wishes in 1940.
