This series contains official papers acquired during William Dacres Adams' employment with the younger Pitt from 1783 to 1806, being the more numerous for the later years. The Portland papers cover the years 1807-1809.
Letters not strictly belonging to either secretaryship have been included under their respective years wherever they seem to have been received by Adams in virtue of his status as civil servant or private secretary. The private papers have thus been reduced to a minimum, and consist chiefly of family correspondence.

William Dacres Adams (1775-1862), a clerk in the Secretary of State's Office, was private secretary to the younger Pitt during the latter's last ministry from 1804 to 1806. After Pitt's death he continued in the Secretary of State's Office until 1807 when the Duke of Portland appointed him as his private secretary. On the Duke's death in 1809 he returned again to the Secretary of State's Office until he was appointed a Commissioner of Woods and Forests from 1811 to 1834.
