The General Teaching Council for England was established by the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 and formed on 1 September 2000. Its parent department was the Department for Education.
The General Teaching Council for England's main aim was to raise the standard of the teaching profession in England. Its work included the maintenance of a register of teachers, publication of advice to the Government on proposals for teachers' professional development, and the production of a Code of Conduct and Practice for Registered Teachers.
On 2 June 2010, the Secretary of State for Education announced his intention to abolish the General Teaching Council for England. The Education Act, which confirmed the Council's abolition on 31 March 2012, became law in November 2011.
