Private, diplomatic and other correspondence, letter books, diaries and papers of Sir Ernest Mason Satow. The collection includes his diary, which covers a period of over sixty five years (1861 to 1926).

With the exception of a few drafts among those addressed to Lord Reay, the letters are all originals which appear to have been returned to Sir Ernest Satow after the death of their several recipients.

After serving in the Japan consular service from 1861 to 1884 and becoming Japanese secretary to the legation in Tokyo, Sir Ernest Satow was successively agent, and then minister, to Siam (1884 to 1888), minister to Uruguay (1888 to 1893) and envoy to Morocco (1893 to 1895), Japan (1895 to 1900) and China (1900 to 1906). After his retirement, he acted as British member of the permanent court of arbitration (1906 to 1912) and as one of the British plenipotentiaries at the second peace conference (1907), both at The Hague.
