PRIS 11
1773-1861
Mainly commitment and discharge books for the Marshalsea Prison. The day commitment books record the name of the debtor brought into custody, the names of the creditor and attorney, with the damages and sums concerned. An entry for the commitment of Charles Dickens' father to the prison is still extant. The books also record the discharges of the day.
A separate series relate to Admiralty prisoners, confined after courts martial, with one further volume containing warrants for the commitment and discharge of such sailors.
The remaining documents are examples of archival material destroyed. They include original orders for discharges and subsidiary documents, from 1812 to 1842, which contained the same information as other existing material and which were destroyed under a schedule of 1906 (Rules and Schedules 1877-1913, p 336).
