Books detailing the execution of the debts and damages awarded of prisoners at the King's (Queen's) Bench Prison, and its successor, the Queen's Prison. The entries include the names of the debtor, creditor and attorney, and the amount of the debt or damages with a record of the repayment. The date of discharge of the prisoner is given in the margin.
The prisoner's discharge date or commitment number can be used to trace records in other series.
Entries are arranged in alphabetical order of prisoners' names, and then under the term in which the debtors were admitted to the prison: Hilary, Easter, Trinity or Michaelmas.
Debtors unable to pay the money they owed were imprisoned until such time as they could discharge the debt or if the creditor's opportunity to prosecute for the money had expired, or until they were released by one of the many Insolvent Debtors' Acts.
