Industrial and Provident Societies
Incorporation within the Registry of Friendly Societies as an industrial and provident society is obtained by registration with the registrar under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965, a consolidation of Acts from 1893. By the 1990s, there were about 8600 such societies on the register. Over a third of these were social and workingmen's clubs, with some 3000 being housing societies, and the remainder consisting mainly of wholesale and productive, retail trading, agricultural, fishing and horticultural cooperatives.
