This series contains records raised by the Coal Division of the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Technology and covers all aspects of Coal Division work from 1962. Files deal with topics such as the ministry's fuel policy in general and involvement with the nationalised coal industry. There are files on the National Coal Board's colliery closure programme and on coal industry legislation, including the administration of the Opencast Coal Act 1958. There are also a number of files on the Aberfan pit disaster.
The series was opened in 1962 at the time of radical changes in arrangements for financing operational expenditure required by the Coal Industry Act 1962, which amended s.27 of the Coal Industry Nationalisation Act 1946.
