Administrative / biographical background
Loan Societies

Under the Loan Societies Act 1840 certification of a body as a loan society is obtained by submitting its rules to the registrar. The object of a certified loan society is the establishment of a fund for making loans, not exceeding £15 and repayable by instalments, to 'the industrious classes'. Such a society is exempt from the provisions of the Moneylenders Acts and from stamp duty. The number of such societies has been decreasing for many years and their total membership and business transacted have also declined.
