Description

This series contains statistics relating to Post Office business, including returns of delivered, posted and registered mails, 1839-1913; comparative summaries of annual returns of work and staff hours from Head Post Offices in the United Kingdom, covering 1923-1966; returns of work and staff on Travelling Post Offices and Sorting Carriages, 1951-1974; and postal business key performance statistics, 1973-1985.

The records are broken down int the following sub-series:

  • Abstracts and returns of mail items, 1839-1913, delivered and posted from Post Towns and sub-offices in England and Wales, the Head Post Offices in London and the GPOs in Scotland and Ireland, including packets paying letter rates, book packets, newspapers, circulars, patterns, samples, postcards, official documents, parcels, sealed bag letters and half-penny packets.
  • Comparative summaries of annual returns of work and staff, United Kingdom, comprising series of returns; showing work load and performance London Area and Provincial Head Offices in the United Kingdom, 1923-1966
  • Reports on the annual returns of work and staff, United Kingdom, 1948-1966; compriseing reports written by the Chief or Deputy Chief Inspector of Postal Services Department
  • Comparative summaries of annual returns of work and staff, London Postal Region, Inner and Outer Area, 1949-1959
  • Returns of work and staff, Travelling Post Offices, Great Britain, 1951-1974; containing a comparative statement of traffic, or correspondence, received in the current and previous year, with percentage increases and decreases, and a detailed return of correspondence dealt with and / or received
  • Postal business key performance statistics, 1973-1985, comprising series' of booklets, issued by the Post Office, containing monthly reports of postal business key statistics covering the whole of the United Kingdom and providing indicators of past, current and future performance
  • Miscellaneous postal statistics, 1814-1990
  • Corporate finance reports on Posts' income and costs, 1981
