Between 1961 and 1981, the various Science and Technology Departments dealt with the financing and management of various research projects relating to overseas development. They had the role of supporting the United Kingdom and international scientific research into the problems faced by developing countries in the fields of medical, economic, environmental, social and engineering research. The departments also oversaw the work of many of the research institutes and stations over which the development departments had control. These included the Anti-Locust Research Centre, the Tropical Pesticides Headquarters and Information Unit and the Tropical Products Institute and Research Unit. The Departments also managed research on development issues on organisations not directly controlled by the development departments, such as the Road Research Laboratory and the Building Research Station.
