Assize files, Midland Circuit (Leicestershire, Warwickshire).

Justices: John Moubray [Mowbray] and Thomas de Ingelby.

Four small files and one loose membrane, all relating to Moubray and Ingelby's assize circuit of 34-35 Edward III.

From comparison with the related plea roll, it is clear that the various files in this piece relate to specific sessions held by these justices. The two Warwickshire files relate to cases heard at Coventry, on the Thursday after the Close of Easter 1360 (JUST 1/1463, rots 7-9) and on the Thursday after the Close of Easter 1361 (rots 30-31), while the Leicestershire files relate to cases heard at Leicester, on the Wednesday after the Close of Easter 1360 (rot 6) and Tuesday after the Close of Easter 1361 (rot 29). Although the thong on the second file is loose, comparison with the roll suggests that it is probably complete. The loose writ (found elsewhere amongst the unsorted miscellanea and placed in this file) relates to the final case enrolled as 'non prosecta' on JUST 1/1463 rot 6, but does not seem to form part of the related file. Presumably it was extracted for some purpose, and a note on the plea roll seems to confirm this. It therefore may properly belong in a later file, but it is unclear which that may be.

Further files relating to the other sessions enrolled on JUST 1/1463 are presumably missing.
