The WorldSkills Competition is a global competition for youth from 17 to 22 years to demonstrate their excellence in skilled professions. The competition was first held in 1950 in Spain and is held in a member country every two years. The competition is promoted and managed by WorldSkills International, formerly known as the International Vocation Training Organisation (IVTO). In 2011 the competion (the 41st) is due to be held in the UK, from 5-8 October 2011 at ExCeL London, with 1,000 competitors from more than 50 countries/regions competing in 46 skill areas.
In the UK, WorldSkills UK run annual quality assured skills competitions which aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their vocational skill. Outstanding WorldSkills UK national finalists may be considered for potential inclusion for the team that goes on to represent the UK at a WorldSkills Competition. WorldSkills UK is managed by the National Apprenticeship Service.
