Registers recording payments made out of the Consolidated Fund, 1834 to 1929, covering various categories of the Civil List (such as the expenses of the Royal Household), the payment of salaries and allowances to public figures such as the Speaker of the House of Commons and to qualifying organisations such as universities, salaries paid to senior legal figures, compensation, advance payments authorised by the Treasury, and annuities paid to the Royal Family, and various other pensions and compensatory payments.

The ledgers of the Royal Charity Fund, 1811 to 1918 and the registers of the Royal Bounty and Special Service Fund (previously maintained by the Treasury under Act 22 Geo III c 82, 29) for the period 1868 to 1910 are also preserved in this series.

In general, the payments are grouped together under headings as follows:

• Civil List Classes I to VI: Payments relating to salaries, retired allowances and expenses of the Royal Household, Royal Bounty, Alms and Special Services, Commissioners of Works and, until 1901, pensions granted by Warrant under the Sign Manual. Compensations in respect of salaries formerly payable to officers of the late Marshalsea Prison also appear under this heading.
• Salaries and Allowances: Salaries of the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Comptroller and Auditor-General and his assistant, the Inspectors of Anatomy (under Act of 2 and 3 Wm. IV, c. 75) and the West India Clergy. The allowances include those formerly paid out of the Land Revenues of the Crown which were transferred to the Consolidated Fund by Act 29 and 30 Vict., c. 62, and the compensations payable under the Copyright Act (6 and 7 Wm. IV, c. 110) to various Universities, etc, in respect of the loss of the right to copies of all works published in the United Kingdom.
• Courts of Justice: Salaries of the superior judicial body, of the County Court Judges, of the magistrates attached to Metropolitan Police Courts, and of the Sheerness and Chatham Police Magistrate. Until 1882 the compensations in respect of abolished offices in Judicial and Ecclesiastical Courts appear under this heading.
• Miscellaneous Services: Compensations for loss of duties on coinage of Tin, etc., payments in respect of the Sardinian and Russian-Dutch Loans, and to Greenwich Hospital (under Act 32 and 33 Vict., 44) are included under this heading.
• Advances: Payments specially sanctioned by the Treasury to meet expenditure incurred for public purposes under the authority of special Acts, e.g. the Barracks Act, 1890 (53 and 54 Vict., c. 25).
• Annuities and Pensions: Annuities to the Royal Family and pensions for naval, military, civil and political services. Other pensions recorded under this heading include pensions to retired Judges of the superior Courts and County Courts, diplomatic pensions, hereditary pensions and the Victoria Warrant pensions, granted from the Civil List in the reigns of George IV and William IV. From 1882 the compensations paid in respect of abolished offices in Judicial and Ecclesiastical Courts are recorded under this heading as, from 1901 in separate volumes, are the pensions formerly paid under Class V of the Civil List.
