In the summer of 1948, neurologist Ludwig Guttmann set up a sporting competition between patients. It was the birth of the Paralympic Games.

The International Transcaucasus Conference on Plant Pathology was held for the first time in Tiblisi, Georgia, in September 2008. The aim of the conference and workshop was to promote collaboration between plant pathologists in the Caucasus and surrounding countries and create links with researchers across the world.
