The information authority was established in October 2006 to standards for data, its collection, and reuse for further education and training in England. The information authority is an independent body with powers from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) from whom it receives funding. It operates in conjunction with other established bodies, including: Office for National Statistics (ONS), the BIS/ Department for Education (DfE) Information Standards Board (ISB), the Managing Information Across Partners (MIAP) programme (notably the Common Data Definitions component) and the Schools Star Chamber.
