Description

Prisoner's name: Josiah Oram [also mentioning prisoners William Newham and John Knight].

Prisoner's occupation: butcher.

Court and date of trial: Leicester Lent Assizes 1828.

Crime: Sheep stealing.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated: Nil; free pardon prepared 11 February 1834 for Josiah Oram.

Petitioner: Two petitions from Mary Oram and Abel Oram, the prisoner's parents, his 6 brothers and Jane Stinson, Ann Goodall, Mary Ball, Sarah Oram, sisters, on behalf of Josiah Oram. 48 people of Sheepshead [Leicestershire] on behalf of Oram, Newham and Knight. Two petitions from Jonathan Ball on behalf of Oram. Thomas Barber (on behalf of Oram). John Oram, the prisoner's brother. 56 people of Sheepshead on behalf of Josiah Oram.

Grounds for clemency: Has conducted himself in an orderly and peaceable manner in prison; he repents of his crime; convict can count on support of his family if he is released; deep sorrow of wife and children and his aged father; main support of the family; the king could not be so hardhearted as not to grant their wish for his release.

Other papers: A letter from the Reverend E M Phillipps transferring a petition. A letter from Mr Legh Keck [MP] transferring a petition. A letter from W Oram referring Viscount Melbourne to Aldermen Barber and Deveril for information. A reply from Mr Philipps to Mr Barber refusing a petition. A note to William Oram 'to be pardoned' on board the York hulk at Gosport.
