Description

General Wm [William] Steuart to [?James Butler, duke of Ormonde, lord lieutenant]: written to [Edward] Southwell about army strength, horses needed and to remind Ormonde about plan to establish guards regiment which he hopes to command as his own regiment by adding some companies. Enclosed [f. 204] dated 1 March 1713, Colonel M. H. to [James Butler, duke of Ormonde, lord lieutenant]: observes highness and obstinacy of Whigs in Ireland and of officers in pay. Supported in their opinions by some great men who expect duke of Hanover and Lord Marlborough to soon come to rescue the kingdom. Officers back from Spain expect to be broke, decrying Ormonde and Oxford as her two evil counsellors. They fear repeal of Triennial act. Boast they can raise men by militia officers' commissions, a practice used before in England to raise men against king by his commissions [i.e. in 1642]. Dated in Dublin. ff. 203-206
