Description

[Sir Constantine Phipps, lord chancellor, and John Vesey, archbishop of Tuam], lord justice, to [?James Butler, duke of Ormonde, lord lieutenant]: extract of letter about Dublin mayoral elections, noted as received from [Edward] Southwell [chief secretary] 11 May: Dublin has returned into [privy] council office their certificate of election of alderman Stoyte as mayor and Mr Porter and Mr Crowther as sheriffs. Council disapproved election of Stoyte and Porter but approved Crowther. Aldermen had rejected mayor's other two nominees, not only Constantine but also Mason, a very honest man and Stoyte's senior. Rejection of Mason shows aldermen have no regard to right and are resolved only to choose those of their own party. If some method is not taken to prevent this, it will be impossible for an honest man to ever get into mayoralty. Dated at Dublin Castle. ff. 195-196
