Description

Extract of a letter. [Sir Constantine Phipps, lord chancellor, and John Vesey, archbishop of Tuam], lord justice, to [James Butler] duke of Ormonde [lord lieutenant]: yesterday Dublin went to election of lord mayor in place of alderman Stoyte, lately disapproved. Mayor nominated (as by custom) three aldermen: Sir William Fownes, Constantine and Mason. Alderman Burton immediately opposed these three, saying it was not the mayor's right to nominate, but ought to be determined by majority vote of board of aldermen who should be put into election, seconded by all but three nominees and Alderman French. After mayor and his allies left, aldermen elected Alderman Pleasant as mayor and Mr King as sheriff. Dated in Dublin. ff. 187-188
