Description

Edward Southwell [chief secretary] to [William Legge] earl of Dartmouth [secretary of state]: yesterday laid before you letter of [Sir Constantine Phipps, lord chancellor, and John Vesey, archbishop of Tuam] lord justice, to [James Butler] duke of Ormonde [lord lieutenant] about Dublin aldermen's opposition to nomination of three of their number by lord mayor. A judge's letter says this has been constant practice and custom these 100 years. Ormonde awaits daily a particular account of matter and legal opinion. Dated in London. ff. 181-182
