Description

[Sir Constantine Phipps, lord chancellor, and John Vesey, archbishop of Tuam], lord justice, to [James Butler, duke of Ormonde, lord lieutenant]: the grand jury (Easter Term, 1713) makes general presentment of large numbers of papists and other disaffected daily going to France. Some have said they would serve the pretender. Affidavit of Thomas Courtney of Dublin, 12 May 1713, before Dav[id] Chaigneau informs that whilst searching several ships in harbour, late January or early February 1713 for Richard Finley, he found 70 or 80 men bound for France. He knew several from Co. Louth, especially one Duffey, who told him he was going for pretender's commission. [for extract see SP 63/369 ff. 160-161]. Dated in Dublin. ff. 175-176
